Getting to Chad

Nearly all international travelers arrive by air to N'Djamena. Here is what you need to know.

Flights to N'Djamena (NDJ)

N'Djamena Hassan Djamous International Airport is Chad's primary international gateway. The airport is small by international standards but handles all major arrivals. Flight options include:

Paris (CDG) — Air France operates direct service. This is the most common route for European and North American travelers connecting via Paris.
Addis Ababa (ADD) — Ethiopian Airlines connects N'Djamena to its global hub, offering connections from Asia, the Americas, and across Africa.
Casablanca (CMN) — Royal Air Maroc provides connections via Morocco, linking to North Africa, Europe, and North America.
Regional African flights — Connections from Douala (Cameroon), Lagos (Nigeria), Khartoum (Sudan), and other West/Central African cities.

Visa & Entry Requirements

A visa is required for most nationalities. Apply in advance — do not rely on visa-on-arrival.

What You Need

Valid passport with at least six months' remaining validity and at least two blank pages.
Visa application submitted to a Chadian embassy or consulate in your country. Allow 2–4 weeks for processing.
Yellow fever vaccination certificate (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis). Mandatory for entry.
Passport-sized photographs (typically two, recent, on white background).
Proof of accommodation or letter of invitation from your tour operator.
Return or onward ticket may be requested at immigration.

Important Notes

  • Apply early. Chadian consular services can be slow. Start the visa process at least 6 weeks before your planned departure.
  • Visa on arrival is technically possible at N'Djamena airport for some nationalities, but it is unreliable and not recommended. Arrive with your visa in hand.
  • Travel permits are separate from visas. If traveling to the Sahara, Tibesti, or restricted zones, your operator must arrange additional permits through the Ministry of Tourism or military authorities in N'Djamena.
  • Registration. Foreign nationals are technically required to register with local authorities within 72 hours of arrival. Your hotel or operator typically handles this.
  • Photography permits may be required for professional equipment. Discuss with your operator before arrival.

Money, Communication & Essentials

💰

Currency

Chad uses the Central African CFA franc (XAF), pegged to the euro (655.957 XAF = 1 EUR). Cash is essential. Card payments are almost nonexistent outside select N'Djamena hotels. ATMs exist in the capital but can be unreliable. Bring euros or US dollars to exchange. For travel outside N'Djamena, carry all the cash you will need.

📱

SIM Cards & Internet

Local SIM cards (Airtel Chad, Tigo) are available at the airport and in N'Djamena. Bring your passport for registration. Mobile data works in the capital and some regional towns but is slow and intermittent. Outside urban areas, there is no coverage. Wi-Fi is available at some hotels in N'Djamena.

Electricity

Chad uses Type C and Type E plugs (European style, 220V/50Hz). Power supply is unreliable even in N'Djamena, with frequent outages. Carry a power bank and, for expedition travel, a solar charger. Hotels and better accommodations often have generators for backup power.

Getting Around Chad

In-country transport ranges from functional to expedition-grade depending on your destination.

Within N'Djamena

Taxis are the primary mode of transport. Negotiate the fare before getting in — meters are not used. Motorcycle taxis (moto-taxis) are common and cheaper but carry higher risk. Your hotel or operator can arrange private drivers, which is recommended for airport transfers and city movement.

Overland Travel

Paved roads connect N'Djamena to some southern towns, but conditions degrade rapidly. Beyond the south, roads are unpaved tracks. 4x4 vehicles are essential for any travel outside the capital. Public bus services exist on some southern routes but are unreliable and uncomfortable. For expedition zones, your operator provides all transport.

Domestic Flights

Limited domestic flights occasionally operate between N'Djamena and Abéché or other regional centers. Schedules are inconsistent and cancellations are common. Do not build a time-critical itinerary around domestic flights. Most expedition travel is entirely overland.

Fuel Logistics

Fuel is available in N'Djamena and major southern towns. North of the Sahel, fuel must be carried in jerry cans. Your operator calculates fuel requirements for the entire route plus a 30% reserve. Running out of fuel in the Sahara or Tibesti is a life-threatening situation. Fuel prices fluctuate and are higher outside the capital.

Logistics Questions About Traveling to Chad

Chad is not a budget destination. Flights to N'Djamena typically range from $600–$1,500+ depending on origin and routing. Guided expeditions to the Sahara or Tibesti can range from $3,000–$10,000+ depending on duration, group size, and operator. Accommodation in N'Djamena ranges from $50–$200/night. Factor in visa fees, travel insurance with evacuation coverage, gear, and contingency funds. The total cost for a serious expedition typically starts at $5,000 per person.
Credit and debit cards are almost never accepted in Chad. Some higher-end hotels in N'Djamena may accept Visa, but do not count on it. ATMs exist at some banks in N'Djamena (Ecobank, Société Générale) but can be out of cash or offline. Bring sufficient euros or US dollars in good condition (no tears, no marks) to exchange at banks or authorized exchange offices. For travel outside N'Djamena, carry all cash for the entire trip.
Essential items include: lightweight, long-sleeve clothing in neutral colors; wide-brim hat and UV sunglasses; SPF 50+ sunscreen; insect repellent with DEET; water purification tablets; headlamp with spare batteries; power bank and solar charger; comprehensive medical kit; photocopies of all documents; satellite communication device (for expedition travel); and cash in euros or dollars. Your expedition operator will provide a detailed gear list specific to your route and season.
